Everything You Need to Know About ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023

After previously hosting three editions partially, in 1987 with Pakistan, in 1996 with Pakistan and Sri Lanka, India is set to host the entirely for the first time.
Preview:
The mega event will begin with 2019 finalists England and New Zealand taking on each other at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 5. The final is also scheduled at the same venue on November 19.
The previous edition saw one of the most dramatic endings to an ODI World Cup. The match, played at the iconic Lord’s cricket ground, ended in a tie, with the super over also ending in a tie
England was named the winner for scoring more boundaries than the Kiwis in the game, marking one of the most bizarre finishes to a World Cup final.
Australia:
The five-time champions will be hoping that their star player is at his very best, who has 834 runs at an average of 46.33 in the World Cup history.
34-year-old all-rounder Glenn Maxwell suffered an injury a few days ago and returned to his home country for recovery and to join his wife, who is giving birth to his child.
“We will monitor Glenn’s recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India before the World Cup,” Dodemaide said.
England:
Talking about another solid favorite to win the mega event, England will enter the event all guns blazing. They have reliable players at every level and will undoubtedly be one of the teams to go far in the tournament.
Harry Brook, who has surprised everyone since making a debut, couldn’t make it to the provisional squad, thanks to Ben Stokes’ return to this format
“There’s still a long time before everyone is meant to get on the plane, so we’ll wait and see what happens,” Buttler said.
“We all know Harry’s a fantastic player, and we saw what he can do the other night. It’s not like it’s a surprise: we know what a brilliant player he is; he’s just the unfortunate one not to be in that squad now.”
South Africa:
South Africa is ready to write another chapter of World Cup heartbreak. Eight of the 15 players of the squad have received their maiden World Cup call, including captain Bavuma.
Eight out of the 15 players have earned their maiden World Cup call-ups, including captain Bavuma. Sensation right-arm pacer Gerald Coetzee, who debuted earlier this year, has taken five wickets in just two matches.
After retiring from Test Cricket last year, 30-year-old wicket-keeper opening batsman De Cock will retire from fifty over format after the World Cup. He was part of the South Africa squad in the previous two editions and has scored 450 runs in 17 matches at an average of 30.
Overall, in this format, he has represented South Africa in 140 matches, scoring 5966 runs at an average of 44.85 and a strike rate of 96.08. He has 17 centuries and 29 fifties under his belt, with a high score of 178 against Australia at Centurion in 2016. As a wicketkeeper, he has taken 183 catches and 14 stumpings.
India:
India announced its strong World Cup squad yesterday; KL Rahul, who was training at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru after injuring his thigh earlier this year, has made his place. He has cleared fitness tests and has joined his team for the Asia Cup.
Regarding omissions, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Prasidh Krishna failed to make it to the squad. The upcoming tournament is a golden opportunity for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to win a second World Cup title, as possibly, both won’t be appearing in the next edition.
New Zealand:
New Zealand is usually the underdog in Cricket but is known as a specialist in the World Cup. After losing the first two T20Is against England, they made a remarkable comeback and won the next two games to draw the series 2-2. Although the World Cup is of ODI format, this comeback, with the World Cup less than a week away, will surely boost them.
However, the most important news for Kiwis is that their talisman will be a member of the squad which will be announced on September 9. Williamson injured his knee in the IPL and, initially, was said to be out from the World Cup as well. However, he has made significant progress in his recovery and will be able to play in the second game in the mega event.
“Kane has applied phenomenal dedication to his rehabilitation and has been supported by a strong group of experts around him,” head coach Gary Stead said.
“He’s left no stone unturned in trying to get back to playing cricket at the highest level. We are delighted to be in a place to select him.
“At the same time, he’s also kept perspective about his recovery and hasn’t wanted to rush or force his way back too early. As we’ve previously said, it’s great he wants to play cricket for New Zealand in the long term.”
“As we’ve said throughout this process, we want to give Kane every available time to aid his recovery. The World Cup is not a short tournament, and we will continue to monitor his progress over the next month ahead of the first tournament match,” he added.
What’s the Format for Cricket World Cup 2023?
The 2023 ODI World Cup will be played in a round-robin format, meaning all ten teams will face every other team in the group stage. The winning team will get two points, while a no-result or a tie would mean one point for each team. At the end of the group stages, the top four teams will progress to the semifinals.
Suppose the semi-finals or the final is tied; a super-over will be played to determine the winner. If the super-over ends in a tie, another super-over will be played to decide the winner.
Regarding reserve day policy, group stage matches will not have any reserve days, as both teams will get 1 point each if the game is washed out or abandoned for any reason. However, the semifinals and the final will have a reserve day.
If no result is possible on the reserve day of the semifinals, the teams in a better position on the table will qualify for the final. If the reserve day of the final is washed out, both finalists will be declared joint winners.
